Jason Reynolds Information
Jason Reynolds (December 8, 1983) is an American author of poetry and novels. He was born in Washington, D.C. Reynolds' first poem, written when he was ten years old, dealt with his grandmother's death in 1994. Reynolds wrote a few lines to console his mother, who had the poem printed on the funeral program, and then he penned poetry after each of his grandmother's siblings died.
Reynolds met collaborator Jason Griffin, who would later become his roommate when he was still an undergraduate. During this time, Reynolds was also introduced to the spoken word and began performing, eventually leading to solo shows, and his first book, Let Me Speak, was published in 2001. During his college years, Reynolds also worked at Karibu Books, a DC bookstore chain specializing in African-American literature. He came across prose that spoke to him for the first time, such as Richard Wright's novel Black Boy, at Karibu.
While in Karibu, he came across street fiction, also known as urban fiction, a literary genre that Reynolds compares to rap's ability to be empathetic "raw and unadulterated For other children, this was their whole lives."
