Janelle James is an actress, writer, and comedian born in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. James got her start as a performer in 2009 at an open mic in Champaign, Illinois, where she was a local. She calls her comedic approach "simply saying crap," and she covers diverse issues in her stand-up acts, such as Trump, parenting, being a woman over 35, and dating. In terms of stand-up, James enjoys the works of Bill Burr, Hadiyah Robinson, John Early, Wanda Sykes, Richard Pryor, and Kareem Green.
Both Just for Laughs and Brooklyn were fans of James's in 2016. Her star rose after being chosen as the support act for Chris Rock's Total Blackout tour in 2017. That same year, she dropped her first comedy album, Black and Mild. She appeared on the 2018 Netflix comedy series The Comedy Lineup, recorded at the Acme Comedy Company in Minneapolis. Furthermore, in 2020, she was scheduled to take the stage at the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival in Los Angeles.
James wrote for the 2017 season of The Rundown with Robin Thede and appeared in recurring roles on the Showtime sitcom Black Monday. She is also a writer and voice actress for Central Park, in addition to her appearances on Crashing and Corporate.
