Irma Ruiz Information
Irma Ruiz (April 24, 1938) is an Argentine ethnomusicologist and teacher. She received her education in anthropology at the University of Buenos Aires and music from the Municipal Conservatory of Music. She gave up her planned piano career in the late 1960s to pursue ethnomusicology at the Instituto Nacional de Musicologa (INM). She then thoroughly investigated indigenous music in Argentina with Jorge Novati.
She oversaw the INM's ethnographic music section in 1971, rose to the position of division leader for the scientific and technical branch in 1981, and later served as the institute's director (from 1983 to 1985 and from 1993 to 1997). The Asociación Argentina de Musicologa (AAM), of which she served as vice-president (1985–8) and president (1989–94), was founded in 1985 as a result of the work she did organizing the Argentine musicology days and editing several publications beginning in 1984.
She promoted both the musicology days and the biennial AAM conference in 1987. She has worked as a CONICET (Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas y Técnicas) official researcher since 1983. Since 1987, she has been teaching at the department of arts.
