In the Heights is a famous musical with lyrics and music by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Quiara Alegria Hudes had written the book of this musical. The story of In the Heights is set over three days. The musical was premiered on July 23, 2005, at Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, Waterford, Connecticut. In March 2008, the show opened on Broadway. In the Heights have been nominated for thirteen times and won the Tony Awards for four times The awards include Best Musical, Best Choreography, and Best Original Score.
In the Heights was written as a draft in 1999 by Miranda. She was in her freshman year of college. When the student theatre company accepted the show, Miranda was in the Second Stage of Wesleyan University. Miranda also added bodegas, salsa numbers, and some freestyle rap to the show. The show played from April 27-29, 2000, as a one-act. The show was 80-minute long in total length. After this successful featuring of the musical, Miranda was approached by a few seniors and alumni of the university who asked her if she is ready to expand the show to a Broadway production.
In the Heights was premiered on Broadway in short previews on February 14, 2008. The official opening of the show on Broadway was featured in March 2008. The Broadway took place at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The cast of the original Broadway show includes Lin-Manuel Miranda (Usnavi), Mandy Gonzalez (Nina), Christopher Jackson (Benny), Olga Merediz (Abuela Claudia), Priscilla Lopez (Camila), Janet Dacal (Carla), Robin de Jesus (Sonny), and several other actors.
