Ibram X Kendi Information
Carol Rogers, a former business analyst for a healthcare organization, and Larry Rogers, a former tax accountant and hospital chaplain, raised Kendi in the Jamaica district of Queens, New York. His parents both served as Methodist ministers before they retired and he has an older sibling named Akil.
Kendi went to Christian private schools in Queens from third through eighth grade. After starting high school at John Bowne in 1997, when Kendi was 15, he and his family relocated to Manassas, Virginia. For his final three years of high school, he enrolled at Stonewall Jackson and eventually graduated in 2000. With a grade point average (GPA) below 3.00 and a SAT score (scale) around 1000, Kendi was labeled "bright but underachieving" by the Washington Post.
Kendi graduated from Florida A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in African-American Studies and magazine production in 2005. At Temple University, under the direction of Ama Mazama, Kendi went on to receive a master's degree in 2007 and a doctorate in African-American Studies in 2010.
