I Pagliacci Information
Pagliacci is an Italian opera that has libretto music by Ruggero Leoncavallo. The opera consists of a prologue and two acts and has been frequently staged by many opera companies with Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni. It is known as "Cav and Pag," a double bill. Pagliacci is the only composer's opera that is widely performed to date. The opera premiered at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan on May 21, 1892. It is conducted by Arturo Toscanini, with Adelina Stehle as Nedda, Victor Maurel as Tonio, Fiorello Giraud as Canio, and Mario Ancona as Silvio.
Leoncavallo stated that the story of Pagliacci is based on an incident from his childhood. It was a murder in 1865 with the victim being a Leoncavallo family servant, Gaetano Scavello. This murder was a result of a series of perceived romantic entanglements that involves Luigi D'Alessandro, Scavello, and a village girl with whom both men were infatuated.
Initially, this opera story was entitled Il pagliaccio (The Clown) by Leoncavallo. On the request of the baritone Victor Maurel, who was cast as the first Tonio, the name was changed from the singular Il pagliaccio to the plural Pagliacci. The world premiere of Pagliacci received mixed critical reviews but faced instant public success.
The UK premiere of Pagliacci took place on May 19, 1893, at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in London. The US premiere occurred on June 15 of the same year, at the Grand Opera House in New York. The orchestra of the opera consists of one cor anglais, two clarinets, one bass clarinet, two flutes, one piccolo, two oboes, three bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, percussion (triangle, cymbals, bass drum, glockenspiel) 2 harps, timpani, tubular bells, and strings.
