Harvey Fierstein Information
Harvey Forbes Fierstein (June 6, 1952) is an American screenwriter, playwrite, actor. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. Fierstein earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute in 1973 after studying at the High School of Art and Design. He got his start in the theatrical industry as a co-founder of the Park Slope, Brooklyn troupe The Gallery Players, and later appeared in Andy Warhol's solitary stage production, Pork. An overdeveloped vestibular fold in Fierstein's vocal cords causes his signature gravelly voice, giving him a "double voice" when he talks. Fierstein sang soprano in a professional boys' chorus before he hit puberty.
Fierstein wrote and starred in the off-Broadway and Broadway productions of Torch Song Trilogy with a young Matthew Broderick, for which he is most known (with Estelle Getty and Fisher Stevens). A total of six awards were bestowed upon him for the 1982 Broadway production: two Tonys (for Best Play and Best Actor in a Play) and two Drama Desks (for Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Actor in a Play), and the Theatre World Award. He was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award as Best Male Lead for his performance in the film version of the novel.
Fierstein starred in and penned the script for the musical A Catered Affair, which premiered in 2007. Broadway premiered the production on April 17, 2008, after previews at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre in September 2007. It was nominated for 12 Drama Desk Awards and took home the Distinguished Production of a Musical trophy from the Drama League.
