Giselle Information
Adolphe Adam composed the music for the two-act romance ballet Giselle. The Ballet du Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique originally staged the ballet on 28 June 1841 at Salle Le Peletier in Paris, starring Italian ballerina Carlotta Grisi as Giselle. It is regarded as a masterpiece in the canon of classical ballet performances. It was a complete and utter success. Due to its enormous popularity, it was staged simultaneously in the US, Russia, and Europe.
Heinrich Heine's prose section on the Wilis in De l'Allemagne and Victor Hugo's poetry "Fantômes" in Les Orientales served as storyline inspiration for librettists Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Théophile Gautier.
Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli were the choreographers behind the original. Carlotta Grisi was the sole dancer to dance Giselle at the Paris Opera for a long time; the role was designed for her as her debut piece for the Paris public. Classical dance steps that have survived to the modern day are largely based on Marius Petipa's revivals for St. Petersburg's Imperial Ballet in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
