Frederick Ralph Cornelius Penner (November 6, 1946) is a Canadian children’s music performer. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Penner had begun making up songs when he was traveling on the bus with his mother at four. He taught himself how to play guitar when he was in grade school. Penner used to perform in school pageants and choirs. During his school days, he took on the lead roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.
Penner completed his graduation from the University of Winnipeg and received a Bachelor in Arts degree in psychology and economics. He was offered to record an album that he accepted immediately, which led him to release his first album entitled “The Cat Came Back.” This album was a breakthrough for Penner’s career, and it helped him become Canada’s leading entertainer for children.
Penner has appeared on various television shows for children, including “The Elephant Show” in 1984. Soon, Penner joined the “Order of Canada” as a member for “using music and song to entertain and educate his young audience.”
Penner has released several notable albums, including The Polka Dot Pony (1981), Special Delivery (1983), A House for Me (1985), Fred Penner’s Place (1988), Collections (1989), The Season (1990), Happy Feet (1992), What A Day! (1994), Moonlight Express (2001), Sing With Fred (2003), Where In The World (2014), and Hear the Music (2017).
