Eve Ensler (May 25, 1953) is an American activist, feminist, performer, and playwright. Ensdler identifies as a Nichiren Buddhist and claims that her spiritual practice involves reciting Namu Myh Renge Ky and practicing yoga. Her parents are Jewish and Christian, and she was raised in a largely Jewish town. Ensler claims that between the ages of five and ten, her father physically and sexually abused her.
Ensler studied at Vermont's Middlebury College, where she developed a reputation as a radical feminist. She endured a succession of abusive relationships after graduation in 1975 and developed a dependence on drugs and alcohol. She married Richard Dylan McDermott, a 34-year-old bartender, in 1978, and he persuaded her to check herself into recovery. She took in Mark Anthony McDermott, her husband's 16-year-old child from his first marriage, when she was 23.
The author said she wanted to separate herself from the surname he used and indicated her preference to be called by the mononym after publishing her book The Apology in 2019 when she detailed her late father's sexual and physical abuse. The Vagina Monologues was written by Ensler in 1996. The play was first presented in the Greenwich Village café's basement and has since been produced in more than 140 nations and 48 different languages.
