Erika Lee Information
Erika Lee is an award-winning non-fiction writer and the Rudolph J. Vecoli Chair and Director of the Immigration History Research Center at the University of Minnesota. She is the granddaughter of Chinese immigrants, who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Lee graduated in 1991 from Tufts University and continued her studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned an M.A. in 1993 and a Ph.D. in 1998.
Lee has written two books on American history entitled At America's Gates: Chinese Immigration during the Exclusion Era, 1882-1943 (2003), and Angel Island: Immigrant Gateway to America (2010). Both of her books received several awards such as; Theodore Saloutos Prize for the best book in immigration studies, the History Book Award from the Association for Asian American Studies in 2003, Caughey Prize in Western History (Western History Association), and 2010 Adult Non-Fiction Award in Asian Pacific American Literature (American Library Association).
Two of her other notable publications are The Making of Asian America: A History and America for Americans: A History of Xenophobia in the United States. Lee won the 2018 Andrew Carnegie Fellowship, 2018 Distinguished Lecturer in the Organization of American Historians, and the 2018 Distinguished Historian Award.
