Earthquake Information
Earth Quake is a power pop band from the U.S. They started in the San Francisco region in 1966 and put out many albums in the 1970s, most of them on Beserkley Records, a label they helped found. The band, formerly Purple Earthquake, began performing in California nightclubs and ballrooms in the late '60s, drawing inspiration from classic rock and blues acts like The Yardbirds, Muddy Waters, and The Kinks.
Matthew King Kaufman, who was in charge of their management, got them signed to A&M Records, where they put out two albums, 1971's Earth Quake and 1972's Why Don't You Try Me? Both of which were commercial duds. In 1973, Kaufman established Beserkley Records after being frustrated with A&M's management of the band and receiving compensation for the band's music that had been used without permission in the film The Getaway. In addition to collaborating with other artists, Earth Quake released four albums on Beserkley from 1975 to 1979.
Acadia Records reissued the original albums of 1971's Earth Quake and 1972's Why Don't You Try Me?—on December 27, 2004, after mastering and remixing them. Gary Phillips passed away in 2007 at the age of 59. The 62-year-old musician, filmmaker, and producer John Doukas died in South Africa on March 19, 2011.v
