Dido and Aeneas Information
The English Baroque composer Henry Purcell wrote the opera Dido and Aeneas (Z. 626), with a libretto written by Nahum Tate. An opera consists of three acts and a prologue. It's unclear when the opera was written or originally performed. By the end of 1689, it had already been played at Josias Priest's girls' school in London, suggesting that it was written no later than July 1688. According to some researchers, the composition may have occurred as early as 1683. An adaptation of Virgil's Aeneid, namely Book IV, tells the story of Dido, Queen of Carthage, and her feelings for Aeneas, a Trojan warrior, and her subsequent heartbreak when he leaves her.
Dido and Aeneas are widely considered a masterpiece of Baroque opera and one of Purcell's most significant dramatic works. In addition to being Purcell's only all-sung dramatic composition, it was also his only opera. It is one of the earliest operas written in English, and it owes a lot to John Blow's Venus and Adonis in terms of form and overall effect. There is also a clear influence from Cavalli's opera Didone. The prologue and three acts structure are shared in both works, and there are parallels between Mercury's solo in Didone and the solo "Come away fellow mariners" in Purcell's work.
