Deepak Chopra Information
Chopra was born to Krishan Lal Chopra (1919-2001) and Pushpa Chopra in New Delhi, British India. His great-grandfather was a British Indian Army sergeant. His father was both a renowned cardiologist and a lieutenant in the British army, where he served as an army doctor at the front in Burma and as a medical adviser to Lord Mountbatten, viceroy of India. He headed the Department of Medicine and Cardiology at New Delhi's Moolchand Khairati Ram Hospital for over 25 years.
As of the year 2014, Chopra's younger brother, Sanjiv Chopra, is a member of the medical staff of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. In 1969, Chopra graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences after completing his elementary schooling at St. Columba's School in New Delhi.
Beginning his medical career in rural India, he recounts spending six months in a community without electricity. In 1970, he tied the knot in India and brought his new bride to the United States. Forbidden by their government, Indian medical professionals could not take the US licensing exam. Thus, Chopra was compelled to make the trip to Sri Lanka to sit for it.
