Dayton Ballet Information
The Dayton Ballet is a popular ballet company that is based in Dayton, Ohio. Founded in 1937, it is the second oldest regional ballet company in the United States. The seasons typically comprise around four weeks performing in the historical 1,139-seat Victoria Theatre in Dayton and 2,300 seat Schuster Performing Arts Center. There is another part of the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance that oversees the Dayton Philharmonic and Dayton Opera.
Josephine (Jo) Schwarz opened Dayton Ballet, and her sister, Hermene, opened The Schwarz of Dance in 1927. Schwarz traveled to Chicago and studied dance and ballet. The first performance of the Dayton Ballet was in May 1938 when a troupe “The Experimental Group of Young Dancersstaged a performance at the Dayton Art Institute.
In 1980, the Dayton Ballet lead by one of Josephine and Hermene’s students, Stuart Sebastian. Before assuming the role, Sebastian had danced for the National Ballet of Washington and the Dayton Ballet. For the next ten years, Sebastian led the ballet company and raised its status and stature.
The Dayton Ballet company has been running a school called the Dayton Ballet School, the oldest dance school in Dayton. The notable alumni include Dan Duell, Jeraldyne Blunden, Jeff Gribler, Joseph Duell, Peter LeBreton Merz, Stuart Sebastian, Donna Wood, and Rebecca Wright. The current executive director/president is Paul A Helfrich.
