David Dorfman Dance Information
David Dorfman (1955) is an activist, teacher, musician, dancer, and choreographer. He grew up in Chicago and attended Washington University in St. Louis, earning a B.S. in business administration from the Olin Business School in 1977. He joined the faculty at Connecticut College in 2004 after earning his MFA in dance there in 1981. He currently serves as department chair.
David Dorfman Dance, one of the best modern dance companies in the country, was created by him in 1985. In 2005, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship award that allowed him to continue his investigation and choreographic exploration of activism, dissent, underground movements, and other subjects related to power and powerlessness. In addition to his 1996 New York Dance & Performance Award, his other accolades include four fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, three fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, an American Choreographer's Award, and the first Paul Taylor Fellowship from The Yard. ("Bessie").
Lincoln Center Out of Doors, the BAM Next Wave Festival, The Kitchen, the Joyce Theater, Dance Theater Workshop, Danspace Project/St. Mark's Church, P.S. 122, and Dancing in the Streets are just a few places where his choreography has been performed in New York City.
