Daphnis and Chloe Information
The sole known work of the Greek romance writer and novelist Longus is Daphnis and Chloe, an ancient Greek masterpiece composed during the Roman Empire. Daphnis et Chloé, a ballet by Maurice Ravel, was performed in 1912 by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes under the direction of Michel Fokine. With Margot Fonteyn as Chloe and Michael Somes as Daphnis, the Sadler's Wells Ballet (now The Royal Piece) premiered the ballet at Covent Garden on 5 April 1951, set to music by Ravel. Frederick Ashton choreographed the piece. John Craxton decorated it.
The setting is the Greek island of Lesbos, where the author is believed to have lived, according to experts. The author gives this perfect universe human qualities through rhetorical and pastoral language; the shepherds and shepherdesses are completely conventional. The Aethiopica of Heliodorus, the leading rival among Greek sexual romances, is notable more for its storyline than for its character development; in contrast, Daphnis and Chloe are more like a contemporary novel.
