Dan Aykroyd Information
Daniel Edward Aykroyd (July 1, 1952) is a Canadian musician, producer, writer, comedian, and actor. He was born in Ottawa, Ontario. He started his education at St. Pius X and St. Patrick's high schools, then transferred to Carleton University to study criminology and sociology before dropping out. For years, he owned Club 505, a Toronto speakeasy open after hours, and performed stand-up comedy in venues across Canada. In Ottawa, Aykroyd honed his musical skills, particularly by frequenting Le Hibou, a club where he saw numerous blues performers.
Aykroyd rose to prominence on the American sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL). He was hired as a writer for the show but joined the cast instead. The initial cast was called "The Not Ready for Prime Time Players" on the show. For the program's first four seasons, from 1975 to 1979, Aykroyd was the youngest cast member.
He won an Emmy in 1977 for his writing on SNL and was nominated for two more Emmys in the same category and one in acting. Five months ago, in February 2015, Rolling Stone published an evaluation of all 141 cast members of SNL to date, and Aykroyd came in at number five. With regular presenter John Goodman standing in for Belushi, he brought back the Blues Brothers act for a few guest appearances. When he hosted the series finale of SNL in May of 2003, he became the second member of the original cast to do so.
