Arch Colson Chipp Whitehead (November 6, 1969) is an American novelist. ?His birthplace is New York City. He attended Manhattan's Trinity School and earned a degree from Harvard in 1991. He grew close to poet Kevin Young in college. Whitehead grew up in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. Whitehead began writing for The Village Voice after finishing college. He started writing his first novels while he was employed with the Voice.
Since then, Whitehead has written ten book-length works, eight of which are novels and two of which are non-fiction, one of which is a reflection on Manhattan life written in the vein of E.B. White's well-known essay Here Is New York. The Rochester Institute of Technology nominated Whitehead's The Intuitionist as the Common Novel (RIT). A long-standing custom at the Institute featured authors including Maya Angelou, Andre Dubus III, William Joseph Kennedy, and Anthony Swofford, as well as the Common Novel nomination.
President Barack Obama included his 2016 book The Underground Railroad as one of five novels on his summer reading list. It was also a choice of Oprah's Book Club 2.0. The Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation honored Whitehead with the 2017 Hurston/Wright Award for Fiction.
