Clue Information
Adapted from the classic board game Clue, this musical has music by Wayne Barker, Galen Blum, and Vinnie Martucci and lyrics by Tom Chiodo. A detective solves a crime in a mansion where several suspects are hiding, but the spectator gets to choose the outcome.
An interactive element is incorporated into the screenplay, allowing audience members to pick cards randomly to ascertain the killer, the weapon, and the room where the crime occurred. The mystery has 216 potential resolutions based on the cards selected, and the screenplay includes suitable lines to be said at the end of the performance for each end.
In 1993, the musical was written by DiPietro and Chiodo. The 1985 dark comedy film Clue was an adaptation of the original game, and the British TV game show Cluedo, which aired from 1990 to 1993, was based on it.
Off-Broadway in 1997, the musical had generally negative reviews during 1995 and 1996 tryouts in Baltimore and Chicago, respectively. As a result, the musical's popularity has skyrocketed, leading to other performances in local theatres.
Peter DePietro directed the musical's June–August 1995 debut at Baltimore, Maryland's New Boston Street Dinner Theatre. "The creators of Clue, the Musical have...found a way to improve the game," was the review in The Baltimore Sun. The following April of 1996, under DePietro's direction, it played again at Chicago's Organic Theater.
