Cincinnati Ballet Information
The Cincinnati Ballet is a ballet company that was founded in 1958 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The professional company had its first performance in 1964. The founding members of the Cincinnati Ballet were Myrl Laurence, Virginia Garrett, and Nancy Bauer, who first charted the company as “Cincinnati Civic Ballet.” The company also hired seven ballet teachers from the Cincinnati area, including Mac Vestal, Shirley Frame Elmore, and Anneliese von Oettingen to form the company. However, currently, Victoria Morgan is the artistic director for the ballet.
In 1963, Cincinnati Ballet started with the first official auditions at a YMCA, where approximately 41 dancers were selected. The debut performances of the ballet took place at the University of Cincinnati, at the Wilson Auditorium in both 1964 and 1965. The first performance presented the original ballet that was by guest choreographer Joseph Levinoff. The ballet is called “Chopin Piano Concerto in F Minor.”
The current member’s lineup for the Cincinnati Ballet includes Melissa Gelfin, Cervillo Miguel Amador, and Sirui Liu as principal dancers; Edward Gonzalez and Maizyalet Velazquez as senior soloists; James Cunningham, David Morse, Marcis Romeo, and Jorge Barani as soloists; Abbey Gonzalez Kay, Matthew Griffin, and Naomi Tanioka as new dancers; Daniel Baldwin, John Michael Donley, Florrie Geller, and Samantha Riester as apprentices. Several other members complete the lineup of the Cincinnati Ballet company.
The company gathers dancers from all around the world. They have groups of versatile performers who have both the contemporary and traditional approaches.
