Christopher Robinson Information
Christopher Robinson was an Organ Scholar at Christ Church, Oxford, and he attended Rugby after being born in 1936. From 1963 to 1975, he served as the organist and master of the choristers; from 1975 to 1991, he was the organist and choirmaster at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. In 1991, he took over for George Guest as the music director at St. John's College. He led the City of Birmingham Choir from 1964 until 2002 and the Oxford Bach Choir from 1976 until 1997.
Notable concerts were also conducted by the conductor, who was responsible for most of the large-choral repertoire performed by the City of Birmingham Choir. Because of his familiarity with and enthusiasm for Elgar's music, Christopher Robinson gave multiple sold-out performances of The Dream of Gerontius. He led two critically lauded performances of Tippett's Mask of Time in 1989 and Messiaen's La Transfiguration de Notre Seigneur Jesus Christ in 1981. The Jacobite Rising, composed by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, had its debut English performance by the Choir, and it was a huge success.
He is an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music and has received honorary degrees from Birmingham University and the University of Central England. He has previously held the positions of President of the Royal College of Organists and Chairman of the Elgar Society. The Queen gave him a Commander of the Victorian Order in 1992 for his work at Windsor Castle. He also received a Doctor of Music (DMus) from the Archbishop of Canterbury in the summer of 2002.
