Carmen Information
Carmen is a four-act opera by the French author Georges Bizet. Based on Prosper Mérimée's story of the same name, Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy composed the libretto. The Opéra-Comique in Paris premiered the opera on March 3, 1875, and the audience was astonished and scandalized by its unconventional style.
The musical passages of the opera are set out by conversation, following the opéra comique style. The narrative narrates the fall of Don José, an innocent soldier whose heart is captivated by the fiery gypsy Carmen in a setting in southern Spain.
A harp, strings, two trumpets, two trombones, two clarinets, two oboes (one double cor anglais), four horns, two trumpets, two bassoons, and two oboes make up the orchestration. The percussion section comprises side drums, timpani, tambourine, cymbals, castanets, and bass drums. For the debut run, 62 musicians made up the orchestra.
Following the debut, most reviews were negative, and the French audience remained unmoved. It wasn't until 1883 that Carmen was revived in Paris after having first earned fame through a string of performances outside of France. After that, it became quite popular both domestically and internationally.
Since then, Bizet's ability to musically portray the feelings and pain of his characters in Carmen has garnered widespread praise for the score's brilliant melody, harmony, atmosphere, and orchestration.
