Blithe Spirit Information
Noel Coward's humorous drama Blithe Spirit is a comedy. The drama follows Charles Condomine, a socialite and author. He invites Madame Arcati, an eccentric medium and clairvoyant, to his home to hold a séance to acquire material for his next book. When he is tormented by the spirit of his irritating and temperamental first wife, Elvira, following the séance, the plan backfires.
With 1,997 performances since its opening in the West End in 1941, the play has set a new long-run record for non-musical British plays. Later that year, it was also a hit on Broadway, where it played for 657 performances. In 1945, Coward directed a film production of the play, starring Rex Harrison, and in 1964, he directed a Broadway musical adaption, High Spirits.
In 1946, Philip Tonge starred as Charles, Carol Goodner as Ruth, Leonora Corbett as Elvira, and Estelle Winwood as Madame Arcati in an American television version. In Britain, BBC television broadcast production in 1948, directed by George More O'Ferrall, Frank Lawton as Charles, Marian Spencer as Ruth, Betty Ann Davies as Elvira, and Beryl Measor reprising her stage role of Madame Arcati.
Hugh Martin and Timothy Gray wrote the script, music, and lyrics for the High Spirits musical premiered in 1964. It had 375 performances on Broadway and starred Edward Woodward as Charles, Louise Troy as Ruth, Tammy Grimes as Elvira, Beatrice Lillie as Madame Arcati. Paul Eddington starred as Charles, Julia McKenzie as Ruth, Anna Massey as Elvira, and Peggy Mount as Madame Arcati in a BBC Radio production from 1983.
