Billy Collins Information
William James Collins is a poet appointed as Poet Laureate of the United States from 2001-2003. Collins was raised in Queens and White Plains after being born in Manhattan to William and Katherine Collins. Collins graduated with a B.A. in English from the College of the Holy Cross in 1963. Then, he went to the University of California, Riverside, for his M.A. and Ph.D. in Romantic Poetry. Robert Peters, a Victorian scholar, and poet, were one of his lecturers at Riverside. He was affected by current poets such as Karl Shapiro, Howard Nemerov, Reed Whittemore, and Beat Generation poets who also impacted him during his teens.
Collins joined the faculty of Lehman College in the Bronx in 1968 and is now a Distinguished Professor of English. He is a founding member of Lehman College's CUNY Institute for Irish-American Studies' Advisory Board. Collins has taught workshops in the United States and Ireland. He served as a visiting writer at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York.
Collins was named Poetry Consultant for Smithsonian Magazine in 2012. Collins guest-hosted Garrison Keillor's popular daily radio show, The Writer's Almanac, on NPR during the summer of 2013. In 2001, 2011, and 2014, Collins was invited to read in the White House three times. He visited Russia in 2014 as a cultural diplomat for the U.S. State Department. Collins toured with singer-songwriter Aimee Mann in 2013 and 2015, sharing the stage with her in a music-poetry-conversation style.
