Ballet BC Information
Ballet BC is a Vancouver, British Columbia-based contemporary ballet group. Ballet BC was formed in 1986 by Jean Orr, David Y. H. Lui, and Sheila Begg as Ballet British Columbia, with Annette av Paul as the inaugural Artistic Director. After financial difficulties and reorganization in 2009, the corporation adopted its current name. Reid Anderson, Patricia Neary, and Barry Ingham took over as artistic directors until 1992, when John Alleyne started a program featuring original choreography, including his The Faerie Queen in 2000 and dances by other Canadian choreographers.
After the reorganization in 2009, Emily Molnar took Alleyne's place. In 2020, Molnar was succeeded by Medhi Walerski. The company is the sole professional ballet group in British Columbia as of April 2015. The Queen Elizabeth Theatre is where it takes place.
Ballet BC performs a contemporary ballet repertoire. The company launched the 2015 Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival by performing three dances, each by a different choreographer, including their resident choreographer Cayetano Soto's Twenty Eight Thousand Waves. In late 2015 and early 2016, the company embarked on a 30th-anniversary tour.
