Ballet Arizona is a Phoenix, Arizona-based professional ballet company that Ib Andersen leads. In 1986, three struggling dance companies in Arizona merged to form the current company. The 31-dancer company is now a mainstay in the American ballet scene. There is a close relationship between the business and the Arizona School of Ballet.
In 1986, Phoenix-based arts patron and philanthropist Allen Rosenberg oversaw the merger of three struggling ballet companies: Ballet West Arizona, Arizona Dance Theater, and the Phoenix Ballet. The original artistic directors of the company were Jean-Paul Comelin, a dancer from New Zealand, and Malcolm Burn, a former member of the Milwaukee Ballet and the Stuttgart Ballet.
Renowned choreographers like Balanchine, Christopher Wheeldon, and Twyla Tharp are among Ballet Arizona's extensive repertory. Choreographing his works for the company, Artistic Director Andersen has reinterpreted numerous classical ballets, such as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, Coppélia, and many more. The business showcased Andersen's updated take on "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in 2008's fall and winter.
The Orpheum Theatre and Phoenix Symphony Hall are frequent venues for the company's performances. Everything except The Nutcracker has "Pre-Performance Chats" available before the show. "Ballet Under the Stars" is an annual series of outdoor performances that kicks off the performing arts season.
