Atlanta Ballet Information
Atlanta, Georgia, is home to the ballet company Atlanta Ballet. The State Ballet of Georgia has been performing for the longest time in the United States. In 1929, Dorothy Alexander established the Dorothy Alexander Concert Group, which later became the Atlanta Ballet. The company was known as the Atlanta Civic Ballet in the 1940s, and Dorothy Alexander served as its director. It was the first regional ballet company in the country. The Atlanta Youth Symphony, which ultimately evolved into the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, received the company's annual revenues in 1946, making it the first organization in the country to contribute to the funding of a symphony.
Robert Barnett, a principal dancer and associate director transferred from New York City Ballet to the organization in the 1950s. George Balanchine granted Barnett exclusive license to use his choreography for The Nutcracker and other iconic pieces, allowing Atlanta Civic Ballet to be the only company in the nation to perform Balanchine's works for several years outside of New York City Ballet. Before hand-picking Robert Barnett as her successor in 1961, Alexander oversaw her dance group for over three decades. Robert Barnett was given the title of artistic director. Atlanta Ballet was given official recognition as the company in 1967.
