Amy Tan Information
Amy Tan was born in the Bay Area of Oakland. She is the middle child of John and Daisy Tan, Chinese immigrants. To escape the upheaval of the Chinese Civil War, her father, an electrical engineer and Baptist minister, left China and made his way to the United States. When she was fifteen, her father and older brother Peter passed away from brain tumors.
Soon after, Daisy uprooted Tan and her younger brother, John Jr., to Switzerland, where Tan graduated from high school at the Institut Monte Rosa in Montreux. During this time, Tan learned that her mother had been married before to a man in China and that she and this guy had had four children together: a son who died when he was young and three daughters. Tan's first novel, The Joy Luck Club, was inspired by this event. Tan and Daisy went to China in 1987, when Tan met her three half-sisters for the first time.
Tan worked as a business writer before enrolling in the Squaw Valley Program, where she wrote her debut novel, The Joy Luck Club. She offered the class attendees a short narrative named "Endgame," adapted from her unfinished novel. Tan was urged by workshop instructor and published author Molly Giles to submit her work to periodicals. FM Magazine and Seventeen published short stories by Tan taken from the Joy Luck Club manuscript, although the New Yorker turned down one of the stories.
