Ali Sethi Information
Ali Aziz Sethi (July 2, 1984) is a Pakistani author, composer, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Lahore, Punjab. Sethi became famous with his first book, The Wish Maker, published in 2009. Sethi had some early exposure to music, but he started his formal studies in Hindustani classical music after he finished college. He studied music with ghazal and classical singer Farida Khanum and with Ustad Naseeruddin Saami, who is widely regarded as a master of both the qawwali and khyal types of singing.
Sethi began focusing on his musical career in 2012, and he made his film singing debut in Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist with the song "Dil Jalane Ki Baat Karte Ho." Then he recorded his versions of many ghazals and Punjabi classics. After receiving widespread acclaim for his rendition of the iconic Punjabi folk ballad "Umraan Langiyaan" on Coke Studio Pakistan in 2015, Sethi has solidified his position as a leading figure among young people committed to preserving and performing such music.
Over the years, Sethi has made multiple appearances on Coke Studio, showcasing his cover and original music. His most recent Coke Studio release, "Pasoori" (2022), broke new ground by becoming the first Pakistani song to appear on Spotify's "Viral 50 - Global" chart, where it stayed for three weeks in May of that year.
