Alex English Information
Alex English (January 5, 1954) is a businessman, coach, and former basketball player. He was born in Columbia, South Carolina. English, a native of his home state, participated in basketball at USC. In 1976, he entered the NBA after being selected in the second round. In the 1980s, English starred with the Denver Nuggets as a small forward.
His tenure with the Nuggets (1979-1989) was marked by nine straight appearances in the NBA postseason, two division titles in the Midwest, and a trip to the 1985 Western Conference Finals. English spent 15 years on four teams in the NBA, averaging 21.5 points and 5.5 rebounds a contest. In the 1980s, English was the most productive scorer in the NBA. Eight times, he was selected to play in the NBA All-Star Game, and three times, he was named to the All-NBA Second Team.
During the 1982–83 NBA season, English ranked first in scoring. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997, and the Denver Nuggets retired his No. 2 jersey in 1992. After retiring from professional basketball, English worked for the NBA, coached several NBA teams as an assistant, started businesses, tried his hand at acting, and eventually became an NBA ambassador. He is a current member of the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees, where he attended college.
