The drama film Akeelah and the Bee, written and directed by Doug Atchison, was released in 2006. It follows 11-year-old Akeelah Anderson, her mother, her classmates, and her coach, Joshua Larabee, while they compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. A play with the same title has been produced to recreate the story.
Akeelah has a strange obsession with words: the more obscure and enigmatic, the better. However, the challenge of her daily living in a rough Chicago neighborhood nearly overwhelms this talent. Akeelah's talent gets her a position in the National Spelling Bee, and her grit and perseverance inspire the people in her neighborhood.
Akeelah and the Bee the play is based on the film and tells the story of an independent 11-year-old girl whose razor-sharp mind might propel her from the Chicago slums to the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals.
