Ailey II is famous for fusing the passion and creative vision of today's most exceptional upcoming choreographers with the spirit and energy of the country's brightest young dance talent.
The Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble was founded in 1974 with the vision of creating an extended cultural community that delivers dance performances, training, and community events to everyone. Mr. Ailey chose Sylvia Waters to be the Company's first Artistic Director. She served in that capacity for the first 38 seasons, guiding Ailey II to become a popular modern dance company, combining a rigorous traveling schedule with substantial community outreach activities.
Robert Battle, Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Bennett Rink, Executive Director of Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, chose Francesca Harper to be the Artistic Director of Ailey II in September 2021. Ms. Harper, a graduate of The Ailey School and choreographer for both Ailey companies, offers new views to Mr. Ailey's legacy while cultivating new creative voices and moving the Company forward.
