Ailey II Information
The Ailey II dance company is well-known for its innovative programming, which showcases the talents of some of the country's brightest young dancers with works by some of the best contemporary choreographers.
The group, originally known as the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, was founded in 1974 to realize Ailey's vision of creating a global cultural community through dance. Mr. Ailey hand-picked Sylvia Waters to serve as the Company's first Artistic Director, and she did so for the first 38 seasons, during which Ailey II became one of the most well-known modern dance troupes thanks to her leadership and the troupe's innovative approach to touring and community service.
Francesca Harper took over as the Artistic Director of Ailey II in September of 2021. Ms. Harper, a graduate of The Ailey School and a former member of both Ailey companies, adds new insights to the legacy of Mr. Ailey while encouraging the development of new artistic voices and fostering the company's forward momentum.
