Agrippina Information
The opera Seria Agrippina (HWV 6) by George Frideric Handel and Cardinal Vincenzo Grimani is divided into three acts. The opera, which Antonio Vivaldi wrote for the 1709–10 Venice Carnevale season, follows Agrippina, Nero's mother, as she schemes to have her son, Nero, installed as Roman Emperor. One of Handel's best operas, with a libretto by the great Italian poet Giuseppe Grimani, is an "anti-heroic satirical farce" replete with contemporary political allusions.
Commentators have theorized that it symbolized Grimani's diplomatic and political competition with Pope Clement XI. After living in Italy for three years, Handel wrote Agrippina. The first performance was on December 26, 1709, at Venice's Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo. It was an instant hit, leading to a record-breaking 27 shows in a row.
The music was acclaimed by onlookers for its high caliber, even though most of it had been altered and lifted from the works of other artists, as was the norm at the time. Even if there was clear support from the audience, Handel did not advocate for future performances. Handel's operas, including Agrippina, went out of style about the middle of the 18th century, despite periodic revivals in the years after the opera's premiere.
