A Christmas Story: The Musical is a theatrical musical based on the 1983 film A Christmas Story. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul composed the musical's music and lyrics, while Joseph Robinette penned the book. Set in 1940s Indiana, the musical follows the story of little Ralphie as he asks Santa for a Red Ryder BB Gun.
The initial Broadway opening for this musical was a limited engagement that began in November 2012 at the Lunt Fontanne Theatre and continued through December 2012. It followed other regional productions, out-of-town tryouts, and national tours.
In December 2009, the musical had its world premiere at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre in Missouri. With John Bolton in the lead role of "The Old Man" and Anne L. Nathan in the supporting role of Mother, the musical was staged by Eric Rosen based on a book by Joseph Robinette and composed by Scott Davenport Richards.
The musical's most recent regional performances, which ran from November 2015 to January 2016, were at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey, and the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. From November 2014 until December 2014, it was staged in Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre, which had previously functioned as a regional venue.
Additionally, the musical was staged at the Wang Theatre in Boston, the Woodlawn Theatre in San Antonio, Texas, and the Bushnell Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut, all during the 2013 season.
