The film A Christmas Story from 1983 has been adapted into a musical for the stage. Pasek and Paul composed the music and lyrics, while Joseph Robinette wrote the book. The story of the musical is about a young boy named Ralphie who longs to receive a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas. The story is set in Indiana in the 1940s. It launched on Broadway in 2012 at the Lunt Fontanne Theatre for a limited engagement that lasted through December, following multiple regional productions, out-of-town tryouts, and national tours.
Ralphie's mother was played by Maya Rudolph, the narrator, and older Ralphie was played by Matthew Broderick; 11-year-old Andy Walken played Ralphie, Miss Shields was played by Jane Krakowski, Ralphie's father was played by Chris Diamantopoulos, and Ana Gasteyer played Mrs. Schwartz. The live musical was broadcast on December 17, 2017. There were three songs eliminated from the original Broadway production and three songs added for this one.
There have been multiple regional performances of the musical, the most recent of which ran from November 2015 to January 2016 at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia and the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey. The musical had previously played at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle as a regional venue between November 2014 and December 2014.
