Worcester Railers Information
The Worcester Railers, sometimes known as the Worcester Railers HC, are a Worcester, Massachusetts-based professional ice hockey club. The club has been in operation since the 2017–18 ECHL season and plays in the Eastern Conference's North Division. As the New York Islanders' ECHL affiliate, the team calls the DCU Center home. This franchise took over for the Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League (AHL), who had moved to San Jose, California, to form the San Jose Barracuda in 2015.
Worcester accepted an expansion club for the 2017–18 season, according to an announcement made by the ECHL on February 8, 2016. Owned by Cliff Rucker, the squad was first managed and presided over by Toby O'Brien. This club joins the Manchester Monarchs as the ECHL's second New England franchise and the first in Massachusetts.
Even though they were eliminated in the first round by the Adirondack Thunder, the Railers managed to make it to the playoffs in their inaugural season. They had a disappointing 2018–19 season, finishing bottom in the North Division. After a dismal 2019–20 season in which they went 4-for-15, the Railers dismissed head coach Jamie Russell. His replacement, David Cunniff, was once an assistant with the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolf Pack.
