As the Pittsburgh Penguins' AHL affiliate in the National Hockey League, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (often referred to as the WBS Penguins) are an official ice hockey team in the National Hockey League.
In Wilkes-Barre Township, Pennsylvania, just a few miles from Wilkes-Barre, they perform in the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. As the team with the greatest regular-season record, they have won the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy thrice.
With 117 points in 2011, the WBS Penguins took home the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy for the greatest regular season finish. The Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award, which goes to the AHL's best goalkeeper of the season, was presented to netminder Brad Thiessen.
Every season since their founding, the Penguins have advanced to the postseason. Between the 2002–03 and 2017–18 seasons, the Penguins had a 16-year playoff run. On September 19, 2010, the Penguins organization hosted their second Black and Gold Game in advance of the 2010–11 season.
The Philadelphia Phantoms, the AHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, the second NHL franchise in Pennsylvania, had been the Penguins' main opponents. The Hershey Bears, a club based in Pennsylvania, emerged as the Penguins' main adversary after the team relocated to Glens Falls, New York, where they played under the name Adirondack Phantoms.
