Washington State Cougars Football Information
The Washington State football team represents Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. The team plays in the NCAA's Division I-A. The team is a Pac-12 Conference (Pac-12) member and competes at the Division I FBS level in the NCAA. The inaugural football team, the Cougars, took the field in 1894.
Martin Stadium is where the Cougars play their home games. The home venue was built in 1972. It was constructed in the same location previously hosting games in 1892, 10 years later, as Rogers Field. The Apple Cup rivalry game, played at the end of the regular season, is traditionally between the Cougars and their major rivals, the Washington Huskies.
John R. Bender led the football team to a 21-12 record as head coach. It was from 1906–1907 and again from 1912–1914. From 1915 through 1917, William Henry Dietz led the Cougars on the gridiron as head coach. Dietz's 1915 team was undefeated after beating Brown in the Rose Bowl. In 2012, Dietz was honored by being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach.
They ended a seven-game losing run to Washington in the 113th Apple Cup with a 40-13 victory over the Cougars under Dickert's direction. Therefore, Dickert was given the position of head coach full-time on November 27.
The 2021 season ended with a 7-5 overall record and a 6-3 conference record, good for second place in the Pac-12 North. In 2022, they finished with the same 7-5 overall record but a poorer 4-5 conference record.
