Tri-City Americans Information
The Tri-City Americans hail from Kennewick, Washington, and they play junior ice hockey in the Western Hockey League. At Toyota Center, the club hosts their home games. The Tri-City Americans' primary radio station, 870 AM KFLD, broadcasts every game locally. Fans may also listen to each game live on KFLD's UStream Channel and occasionally on Saturday evenings on KVEW 42.2. The Tri-City Americans were also featured in the "Day One" episode of Z Nation.
One of the earliest WHL franchises is the Tri-City Americans. They debuted 1966 under Calgary Buffaloes and changed their name to the "Centennials" following the 1966–67 season. Before moving to Nanaimo, British Columbia, the franchise was known as the "Billings Bighorns" from 1977 to 1982. After that, they became the Nanaimo Islanders.
During the 2002–03 season, Shannon Szabados was the first female player to participate in the WHL. She was sixteen years old and played one game for the Americans. Szabados represented Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics and earned a women's ice hockey gold medal.
After a match against division opponent Spokane Chiefs in Kennewick, Washington, at the Toyota Center on March 15, 2008, the Americans claimed the US Division regular season championship for the first time during the 2007-08 WHL season. On March 13, 2010, the Americans played Spokane in front of 6,053 fans, more than this amount. After a historic 2010 playoff run that included sweeps of the Chilliwack Bruins, Kelowna Rockets, and Vancouver Giants, the Americans lost a five-game championship series against the Calgary Hitmen.
