Toronto Sceptres Information
PWHL Toronto is a Toronto, Ontario, Canada-based professional ice hockey club. They joined the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL), one of its six original franchises. Three-year contracts were inked on September 5, 2023, by Toronto's initial three players: Blayre Turnbull, Sarah Nurse, and Renata Fast, all of whom were members of the Canadian national team. Jocelyne Larocque was the first player taken in the first PWHL draft on September 18. Larocque was picked second overall.
The announcement that the team's colors will be blue, black, and white was made in November 2023. That same month, news broke that the former Maple Leaf Gardens, now known as the Mattamy Athletic Center, would host the Toronto PWHL. Visiting New York defeated host Toronto 4-0 in the inaugural PWHL game at Mattamy on January 1, 2024.
"The Battle on Bay Street" was the official name for the first game played in the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on February 16, 2024, when the city hosted Montreal. With a sellout crowd of 19,285, the game broke the previous mark of 18,013, established at the 2013 IIHF Women's World Championship, setting a new league and women's hockey attendance record.
