Toronto Marlies Information
One professional ice hockey team hailing from Toronto is the Marlies. They are Eastern Conference members who play in the North Division of the American Hockey League (AHL). The Marlies are a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs' NHL affiliate and other professional sports clubs owned by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. Coca-Cola Coliseum has been the home field for the Marlies since 2005.
When they first began play in 1978, the Marlies were known as the New Brunswick Hawks. Before settling in Toronto in 2005, the club moved to St. Catharines, Newmarket, and St. John's. In honor of the Toronto Marlboros, a junior hockey club once sponsored by the Maple Leafs, the team was dubbed the Marlies when it moved to Toronto. The Marlies have made it to the Calder Cup Finals twice before, in 2012 and 2018, with the latter series being a victory for the Marlies.
The Marlies defeated the Texas Stars 4-3 in the 2017–18 AHL finals to claim their inaugural Calder Cup. For a team headquartered in Toronto, it was the first major hockey championship since 1967. After Sheldon Keefe was promoted to coach the Maple Leafs, Greg Moore was named head coach of the Marlies on December 1, 2019.
