Joni Taylor, who is in her first season as head coach, took over for Gary Blair, who stepped down after 37 years in the position, 19 of those at TAMU. Reed Arena, located on the Texas A&M University campus in College Station, Texas, has a capacity of 12,989 and is the home field for the Texas A&M Aggies.
The 2007–08 squad achieved their best AP Poll finish by placing eighth that season. In addition to reaching the Elite Eight on its five NCAA tournament trips, the team was seeded first. Texas A&M made their first-ever Final Four participation on March 29, 2011, after defeating Baylor.
The Aggies won their first national title after sweeping Stanford (63–62) and Notre Dame (76–70) in the Final Four. After Leon Barmore guided Louisiana Tech to the 1988 title, Gary Blair became the first male coach—aside from Geno Auriemma of Connecticut—to win a women's basketball national championship.
