State Fair Classic Information
In 1925, the Wiley College Wildcats and the Langston University Lions played in the first State Fair Classic in the Cotton Bowl. On Monday, October 19, 1925, in front of a crowd of 5,000, the inaugural match ended in a scoreless tie. Before Prairie View replaced Langston in 1929, the two teams played in Dallas for four consecutive years.
Traditionally, the city's black high school football championship would take place in the day on "Negro Day" at the State Fair of Texas, followed by the highly anticipated college game that night. The Texas State Fair Classic and the Louisiana State Fair Classic both took held on Monday nights from the 1920s through the 1960s, suggesting that they may have inspired the concept of "Monday Night Football" early on.
During that period, PVAMU played not just Wiley but also Tennessee State in 1956 and Texas Southern until 1959 in the State Fair Classic. After Bishop College moved to Dallas in 1961, Wiley no longer participated in the yearly contest. Prairie View A&M's presence in the Cotton Bowl continued through games against Bishop and others until 1985 when the school's traditional rivalry game with Grambling was moved there.
