Springfield Thunderbirds Information
As of the 2016–17 season, the Springfield Thunderbirds are a professional ice hockey club in the American Hockey League. They play as the St. Louis Blues' minor league affiliate in the NHL. The MassMutual Center is the home arena for the Springfield, Massachusetts, Thunderbirds. In May 2016, after the Springfield Falcons were sold to the Arizona Coyotes and moved to Tucson, Arizona, a Springfield-based consortium bought the AHL's Portland Pirates and brought them back to Springfield for the 2016–17 season.
The Springfield Thunderbirds and the St. Louis Blues, an NHL affiliate, announced a five-year affiliation arrangement on March 6, 2020. The deal began with the 2020–21 season. Despite several recalls to the NHL, the connection with Florida did not result in any playoff appearances. Attendance increased in all four of the team's seasons. After spending time with the San Antonio Rampage, an affiliate of the Blues, Drew Bannister was named the team's second head coach.
Following the easing of limitations in the 2021–22 American Hockey League season, the Thunderbirds enjoyed their finest year, finishing first in the Atlantic Division with a record of 43-26-4-3 and an average of 5,375 fans per game. They advanced to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, winning all three rounds with a 7–0 record against Laval Rocket. They swept the Wilkes–Barre/Scranton Penguins and the Charlotte Checkers in the first two rounds.
