Silver Spurs Rodeo Information
Every year, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association ranks the Silver Spurs Rodeo as one of the top 50 events in the country. (PRCA). However, the Silver Spurs Rodeo began as a small get-together of farmers in Osceola County. Those early farmers met in Tallahassee in 1941 to participate in Governor Spessard Holland's inaugural parade. Their presence drew notice from across the state, which gave rise to the idea that they should keep getting together to pursue their passion for horseback riding.
The Silver Spurs Riding Club was established in May of 1941. The club's high level of activity and subsequent statewide renown were unsurprising developments. The group had already held a small rodeo and performed a square dance on horseback (called a "Quadrille") by the end of their first year in Moultrie, Georgia. They marched in the Orange Bowl Parade in Miami, Florida, and attended the state Kiwanis Convention in Orlando. They gave performances in 1942 to raise money for the American Red Cross, Crippled Children, and the Army-Navy Relief Show. The club members constructed the first rodeo arena on property donated by Henry O. Partin in 1943. The property in question was at the intersection of present-day Neptune Road and Kings Highway in Kissimmee.
