Rice Owls Football Information
The Rice Owls football program plays for Rice University in American football. The squad participates in the American Athletic Conference and the NCAA Division I FBS level. Built in 1950, Rice Stadium hosts home football games for the Owls. Ahead of only Tulsa, Rice boasts the second-smallest undergraduate enrollment among any FBS member.
Starting in 2006, Todd Graham guided the Owls to their first bowl game in 35 years—the 2006 New Orleans Bowl. After just one year, he left; David Bailiff replaced him and brought the Owls to three bowl games in eleven years, including their first ten-win seasons in half a century. Built in 1950, Rice Stadium has housed Owls football exclusively ever since. In January 1974, it staged the NFL Super Bowl. It replaced the original Rice Field—now Rice Track/Soccer Stadium to boost seating.
Rice has a crosstown rivalry with Houston. Every year, UH and Rice compete for the Bayou Bucket, a worn-out bucket discovered at an antique store by former Rice guard Fred Curry. Curry fashioned it into a $310 award. Five miles separate the two colleges in Houston. The two teams compete as non-conference rivals as plans permit, even if they attend different leagues. By 2023, Houston led the series 33–12.
