Rice Stadium is a football stadium located at Rice University, 6100 South Main Street, Houston, Texas. It is the official home field of the Rice Owls football team. The facility opened to the general public on September 30, 1950, at a construction cost of around $3,295,000. Currently, it has a seating capacity of 47,000 people but can expand to 59,000. It is the second-largest stadium in the Southwest Conference as it originally seated 70,000. The venue is owned and operated by Rice University. The site's architecture was designed by Hermon Lloyd & W.B. Morgan and Milton McGinty.
The first game played at the stadium was a night match between the Rice Owls and the Santa Clara University Broncos on September 30, 1950. In 1957, Rice Owls defeated Texas A&M at the stadium. In addition to Rice, other football teams also played here, including; Bluebonnet Bowl (1959-1967 and again in 1985 and 1986), the University of Houston football team (1951-1965), and the Houston Oilers (1965-1967). The venue also hosted Super Bowl VIII between Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins. On July 2, 1988, the stadium hosted a Monsters of Rock tour with Kingdom Come, Van Halen, Scorpions, and Dokken. On September 12, 1962, John F. Kennedy gave his famous speech extolling the necessity to send a man to the moon.
