The Friars are a symbol of Providence College, a Rhode Island institution. In 1974, the program's first season was coached by Kay McDonald. The Big East is home to some of the country's most formidable Division I rivals, including Villanova, Marquette, and Seton Hall.
With multiple appearances in the NCAA Tournament, the Providence women's basketball team has enjoyed a fantastic playoff run. Despite being the ninth seed in the NCAA Tournament, James Madison eliminated the Providence Friars in the first round of play twelve years after their first game.
Bob Foley guided the Friars to six straight postseason appearances and four straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. Providence began the run in 1989 with a No. 9 seed. Once again, the Friars earned a spot in the tournament in 1990 after sweeping the regular season and conference tournament crowns. With a razor-thin victory over Maryland, they made it to the Sweet Sixteen, the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament triumph.
